What A TDS Reading Can—and Cannot—Tell You
TDS indicates the estimated amount of dissolved substances in water. It is useful for comparing water samples and monitoring changes, but a low reading does not automatically prove that water is safe to drink.

What does TDS mean?
TDS stands for Total Dissolved Solids. It estimates the concentration of dissolved ions and substances in water and displays the result in PPM.
Can this meter tell me whether water is safe to drink?
Not by itself. The meter can help compare dissolved-solids readings, but it cannot detect every contaminant or determine complete drinking-water safety.
Can I use it to check my water filter?
Yes. Testing water before and after filtration can help you observe changes in TDS readings. Always follow the filter manufacturer’s replacement schedule as well.
Does it measure pH?
No. A separate pH meter or pH test kit is required to measure acidity and alkalinity.
Can it measure water hardness?
TDS may reflect dissolved mineral content, but it does not provide a direct hardness measurement. Use a dedicated hardness test for accurate calcium and magnesium results.
How should I clean the probe?
Rinse the probe with clean water after testing, gently shake off excess moisture and replace the protective cap after the probe has dried.
Can I immerse the entire meter?
No. Immerse only the probe area to the level specified in the user manual. Keep the screen, buttons and battery compartment dry.
